Iggy Pop UPDATE 12.3.11: IGGY IS CANCER FREE!!!!!
The biopsy results finally came in this week, and we still feel like we're dreaming at getting such good news! Dr. Oakes was able to remove ALL of the cancerous cells when he amputated Iggy's tail. All of us at Dogma are so grateful to everyone who prayed for Iggy, kept him in your thoughts, helped spread the word about our financial need and donated to help Dogma give Iggy a second chance at a long life.
Iggy's story was recently featured in The Osprey Observer. Dr. John Ligori said, "If it wasn't for Dogma stepping in to help this dog, he would have been dead within a year." Thanks to everybody who helped, Iggy is now cancer free and has many, many more good, happy years ahead of him! Much love to you all!
Iggy Update - 11.23.11
We are happy to report that Iggy came through his surgery with flying colors! Dr. Matt Oakes of Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists in Largo took excellent care of Iggy, and Dr. Oakes and his staff also took very good care of Iggy's foster mom, going out of their way to put her at ease.
Iggy was released from the hospital on Saturday afternoon, and he was very happy to be back home where he belongs: snuggling in his foster parents' bed and his favorite spot on the couch! Iggy didn't have his normal voracious appetite for a couple of days, but on Monday, he seemed to be back to his old self. He even stood on his tippy-toes to counter surf for food at dinnertime! When there are mashed potatoes within reach, you would not believe how Iggy can stretch himself out!
To Iggy, the worst part about the whole experience is having to wear a big, blue e-collar for the next ten days. When interviewed, Iggy said, "I told my foster parents that if they take this cone off of me, I promise not to lick my stitches! I am bumping into things and the cat is making fun of me! This is so not cool!"
Iggy's outdoor activity also has to be restricted to just going outside to pee and poo. We told Dr. Oakes that keeping Iggy indoors during his entire recuperation isn't really a problem since Iggy prefers to do his business inside anyway.
Results of the biopsy will be back next week and we are hopeful that all of the cancerous cells were removed along with Iggy's tail. Dogma is just a small, local, non-profit dog rescue, and we don't feel like we are out to change the world, we don't have any lofty ambitions. We just want to save some good dogs and have fun doing it. But dogs like Iggy Pop who are so deserving of people's selfless donations and prayers do make us pause to consider the bigger picture ... that every single one of the formerly discarded dogs in our care represent hope for a better future where every neglected or abused dog has the opportunity to live their life to the happiest and to the fullest, and with people who give them as much love as they receive from these dogs.
As we enter into the Thanksgiving weekend, please know that we are most grateful to those who sent donations and prayers to Iggy. Cheers!

Before Iggy's Teeth Surgery:
Dogma wants to thank everyone for their prayers, support and donations for Iggy Pop! The Dream Team of Dog Care has been assembled for Iggy: Dr. John Ligori is Iggy’s vet, Dr. Stu Rosenburg is Iggy’s alternative medicine vet, Dr. Matt Oakes is Iggy’s surgeon, and Wag of Davis Island and Health Mutt in Seminole Heights are providing all-natural/carb-free food and treat samples. We are awestruck that such amazing people with exemplary credentials are coming together to help one (formerly) neglected little dog. We are so grateful to every single person who has contributed to Iggy’s well-being! THANK YOU, TEAM IGGY! On Friday, Nov. 18, Iggy will have his tail amputated in hopes of removing all of the cancerous cells. By removing his tail, Dr. Oakes feels that Iggy will live a long, healthy and very happy life. Most importantly, his life should be cancer free. The surgery will cost $1500 and Dogma has already raised $500 thanks to so many people’s generosity! With $1000 more to go, we are hoping that more people will hear Iggy’s story and will help us raise the remainder of the surgery bill so that Dogma can continue its mission of saving good dogs and providing the care that each one so deserves. PAYMENT FOR IGGY’S SURGERY IS DUE SATURDAY, NOV. 19! Iggy did nothing to deserve the life he was living. His former owner made the choice to let her husband to banish Iggy, this remarkable little dog, to being a neglected and lonely yard-dog. Vet care for Iggy was obviously non-existent for a long time and while Iggy is worth every penny, Dogma is paying the price for his neglect. When Iggy first arrived in foster care, he slept all the time. But thanks to Team Iggy, he is a new dog: outgoing & social, having fun with his new friends (both human and doggie) and sleeping soundly under the covers of his foster parents’ bed every night! We are hoping that Iggy has many more years of such a life ahead of him ... the life of a doggie rock star ... the life every dog deserves to have. Tax deductible donations to Iggy’s care can be made through Dogma’s website, www.DogmaRescue.org or by check payable to Dogma Pet Rescue and mailed to 10312 Bloomingdale Ave. Ste 108-114, Riverview,FL 33578. XOXOXOXOXO to you all!
As a very special thank you, Sarah of Red Canary Photography, photographer of Dogma’s 2012 Calendar, is donating a free mini-session photoshoot to whomever donates the largest amount for Iggy! We are so grateful to Sarah for this gift! Thank you!!!
